Health and Safety Policy for Removal Company Brent

Removal Company Brent is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, visitors and customers. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with removals, transportation, loading, unloading, packing, storage and related activities within our service areas.

Our objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, comply with relevant health and safety legislation, and promote a culture in which safety is an integral part of everyday work. This policy applies to all locations where we operate and to all individuals engaged in our activities.

Management Responsibilities

Senior management holds overall responsibility for ensuring that this Health and Safety policy is implemented, maintained and periodically reviewed. Management will provide appropriate resources, information, instruction and supervision to support safe working practices and continuous improvement.

Managers and supervisors are responsible for identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing suitable control measures for all removal and transport tasks. They must ensure that staff follow agreed procedures, make correct use of equipment, and report any concerns or incidents without delay.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees share responsibility for maintaining a safe workplace. Every member of staff must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.

Employees must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment where required, and cooperate fully with training and safety initiatives. Any accidents, near misses, hazards or unsafe conditions must be reported promptly to a supervisor so that corrective action can be taken.

Risk Assessment and Control

Removal Company Brent will carry out regular risk assessments for typical removal activities, including manual handling, working in and around vehicles, operating lifting equipment, and working at customers premises. Site specific assessments will be undertaken where necessary, taking into account restricted access, parking issues, stairs, lifts and any other relevant features.

Control measures may include route planning to minimise vehicle risks, safe systems of work for loading and unloading, use of mechanical aids for heavy items, clear communication within teams, and suitable scheduling to reduce fatigue. We will review risk assessments periodically and following any incidents, changes in work practices or introduction of new equipment.

Manual Handling and Safe Lifting

Manual handling is a core part of removal work and presents a significant risk of injury when not carried out correctly. We are committed to reducing manual handling risks by avoiding unnecessary lifting, using mechanical aids whenever feasible, and ensuring that lifts are shared between team members when appropriate.

All staff will receive instruction in safe lifting techniques, including assessing loads before lifting, keeping items close to the body, maintaining good posture, and avoiding twisting while carrying. Excessively heavy or awkward items will only be moved following specific planning and with suitable equipment and support.

Vehicles, Driving and Transport Safety

Our vehicles will be maintained in a roadworthy condition and inspected regularly. Only authorised and appropriately licensed drivers may operate company vehicles. Drivers must follow traffic laws, drive responsibly and adhere to any company rules on journey planning, rest breaks and load security.

Loads must be evenly distributed, packed and secured to prevent movement during transit. Access areas around vehicles must be kept clear when loading and unloading, and staff must remain alert to moving vehicles and other road users while working at the roadside or in busy service areas.

Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment

Removal Company Brent will provide suitable tools and equipment for the safe handling of goods, such as trolleys, ramps, straps, blankets and lifting devices. All equipment will be maintained, inspected and replaced as necessary. Staff must not use defective or unsuitable equipment and must report any faults immediately.

Where risk assessments identify the need for personal protective equipment, such as gloves, protective footwear or high visibility clothing, it will be provided and must be worn and looked after properly by employees. PPE is regarded as a last line of defence and does not replace safe working methods.

Training, Information and Supervision

We recognise that effective training is essential to safe removal operations. All new employees will receive an induction covering key health and safety procedures, emergency arrangements and safe working practices specific to removal work.

Ongoing training will be provided as required, including manual handling techniques, vehicle safety, equipment use and incident reporting. Supervisors will monitor compliance with procedures, provide guidance and ensure that less experienced staff are adequately supported and supervised.

Working at Customer Premises

Our teams often work within homes, offices, storage facilities and other premises. We will respect each premises and take steps to control risks to customers, visitors and the public. This includes keeping walkways clear, managing trailing cables, securing doors and gates when necessary, and handling items carefully to prevent damage or injury.

Where conditions are unsafe, such as inadequate lighting, obstructed access or structural hazards, work will be paused and the situation assessed. We will cooperate with customers and site controllers to resolve issues before proceeding.

Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work related ill health must be reported and recorded. This information is used to identify patterns, address root causes and improve our procedures. Where required by law, incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities.

We encourage a positive reporting culture in which staff feel able to raise safety concerns without fear of blame. Investigations will focus on learning and prevention rather than individual fault, except in cases of deliberate or reckless behaviour.

Emergency Preparedness

We will establish and communicate clear procedures for responding to emergencies such as fire, vehicle collisions, injuries and spills. Employees will be informed of emergency arrangements at our facilities and instructed to cooperate with the emergency procedures in place at customer premises.

First aid provisions will be suitable and sufficient for the nature and scale of our activities. Employees will know how to access first aid assistance and how to contact the emergency services when required.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

Removal Company Brent will monitor health and safety performance through inspections, audits, incident data and staff feedback. This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure it remains effective and reflects current legislation, best practice and the evolving nature of our services.
